History of Balcones Council

Camp Fire USA Balcones Council began in 1966 in Austin, Texas as an offshoot of Camp Fire Girls. In 1970, Camp Fire became the first youth organization to include the entire family in its programming. We currently serve 10 counties throughout central Texas. As a charter council of Camp Fire USA, the Balcones Council is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Formerly known as the Capitol Area Council, the name Balcones derives from the Balcones fault line that runs throughout much of our service area.
Since its inception, our council has provided youth in central Texas with service learning opportunities, and hands-on experiences with leadership and outdoor skills. The Balcones Council was the first youth organization in the area to provide all-inclusive, nondenominational small group programs.
